From Hypnagogic Pop to Noise: Extreme Chill Festival Starts Today in Reykjavík

03 September 2025

The experimental music festival Extreme Chill takes place September 3–7, marking its 16th edition. As in previous years, audiences can expect an extraordinary lineup of artists spanning everything from hypnagogic pop to experimental ambient and noise music.

Among the performers are lo-fi pioneer John Maus, the Cascadian dark-ambient artist Loscil, electro-pop group Xiupill, sound artist Þórunn Björnsdóttir, theremin virtuoso Hekla, and the experimental duo R-O-R – comprised of Gyða Valtýsdóttir and Úlfur Hansson – to name just a few.

The festival will open at Bíó Paradís with a tribute to the late Árni Grétar Jóhannesson (Futuregrapher), and will then take place across several downtown venues, including Gamla Bíó, Iðnó, Bíó Paradís, Húrra, Space Odyssey, and more.
